Motel Miles Origin Story

Motel Miles team before the renovation

Renovating and opening a 1960s roadside motel wasn’t exactly on Awna or Whitney’s radar. But when Awna stumbled upon the listing in late August 2024, something about it felt like it needed to be shared. She sent a quick text to Whitney with the link and a simple question: Boutique motel in Miles City?

It immediately piqued Whitney’s interest. Without overthinking it, she agreed to join Awna and Tj to check out the Star Motel. Expectations weren’t high, yet the reality still managed to be rougher than they imagined. But even through the peeling paint and years of neglect, there was a flicker of possibility—something worth a second look. A few days later, they returned, this time with Kevin. Skeptical but not entirely opposed, he listened as the idea started taking shape.

Then came the call: if they were serious about making an offer, they had to move fast. By then, Awna and Whitney had already started dreaming up names, and Kevin and Tj were running numbers. What once seemed like a far-fetched idea was suddenly very real. After a few bumps in the road, the offer was accepted, and in November 2024, Tj and Awna Irish, along with Kevin and Whitney Bird, officially became the new owners of the Star Motel.

The Star Motel, established in the 1960s, was once a bustling hub for road trippers and travelers passing through Eastern Montana. Even in its state of disrepair, you couldn’t help but feel the weight of its history. There were so many signs of the motel’s legacy, it was impossible not to feel nostalgic for a simpler time.

From the moment the keys were handed over, it was a mad dash to clear the place out—a job that turned out to be far bigger than they imagined. (They’re still unearthing treasures and trash months later.) Renovations started soon after, and they haven’t looked back since. Breathing new life into the motel has been a labor of love, grit, and determination. There have been setbacks—some frustrating, some laughable in hindsight—but the progress has been just as rewarding. Every week brings them one step closer to officially opening the doors to Motel Miles.

The support from family, friends, and the community has meant everything. This journey has been unexpected, wild, and challenging—but more than anything, it’s been worth it. Here’s to new beginnings and the road ahead. 🛎️✨
